Why?

The typical hackathon or makathon events are long and may require overnight stay and most high school students are unable to participate. miniMAKEathon is a shorter event and provides a fun event format for high school and college students to explore, build, create and discover through hands-on projects.

Our Mission

  1. Organize and support high energy miniMAKEathon STEM events in OC and surrounding areas.
  2. Partner and and collaborate with industry and educational institutions to promote STEM education K- 16
  3. Provide events that will inspire the youth to pursue STEM education and career
  4. Promote creative problem solving and soft skills.
  5. Provide industry partners a platform to identify students with STEM skills for internship and potential job opportunities and placements.
  6. Provide industry partners a platform to articulate their 21st century workforce skills and knowledge needs to the K-16 academic institutions and validate student readiness.

What is a miniMAKEathon?
A miniMAKEathon is a place where the only thing limiting what you build/code/create/develop is your own creativity - we'll provide the rest. Be with us for around 20 hours with the smartest people you'll ever meet, creating the coolest things you have ever created, and chugging more of your favorite energy drink than you ever thought possible.

Who can participate in miniMakeathon?
miniMAKEathon is open to all High School and college students and all majors from Orange County. High School Students must complete Parental Permission and Liability Waiver.

What kind of projects can I do at the miniMAKEathon?
Track I - Codologie©: Information and Communication Technologies (Information Support and Services, Networking, Software and Systems Development)
Track II - Buildologie©: Robotics and Automation
Track III - Gamologie©: Game Development and Simulation

What does the miniMAKEathon site provide? Industry Mentors to share their work experience, Work Space, electric Power outlet, Internet, Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks and drinks.

Where is miniMAKEathon?
miniMAKEathon is being held at the Fair Ground in Costa Mesa.

How many people can be on a team?
Typically, teams are comprised of 3 members.

Can we register as a team?
We encourage you to register as a team of 3 members!

What if I don't have a team?
No worries! We are planning to match people into teams at the beginning of the event.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?
Bring a valid Photo ID

Is Parking free and where do I park?
Parking is free for participants for the duration of the event at the Fair Ground. Parking attendants available.

Is my registration/ticket transferable?
Your registration/ticket is not transferable.

Can I update my registration information?

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

What is the refund policy?
Registration fee not refundable.

I don't have an idea yet. What should I do?
Keep those creative juices flowing. If you still don’t have an idea at the time of the event, our sponsoring partners will be on-board to help brainstorm and mentor projects.

I’m a beginner. Should I still participate?
Don’t worry! We encourage people of all skill levels to come and learn! We have mentors, teachers, and experienced makers and hackers to help out. Our main goal is to provide resources and focus on everyone learning something new at the weekend!

Should I be starting on my project right now?
Nope! In the spirit of miniMAKEathon, Participants are not allowed to bring projects that have already been started/made. That being said, any useful files (CAD, code, etc.) and documentation is highly encouraged.

How much does it cost for me to participate in miniMakeathon?
The registration fee is $10 per individual student. Registration is via eventbrite.

How long is miniMAKEathon?
The event starts at Friday morning 9 am. April 21st, and ends April 23rd Sunday at 5 pm. Due to supervision restrictions, there is no sleep over.

What training do I need to participate in miniMAKEathon?
You don't need any training. Your interest to explore the project tracks offered in the event will do.

Will there be mentors to guide me?
Yes! Our sponsors are sending some STEM professionals to share their experiences with you.

What should I bring?
Yourself, an idea, a photo ID plus Parental waiver and permission slip if you are a high school student, and your making or hacking setup. Note: You are not allowed to bring any materials that are hazardous to life and injurious to health.

What should I create?
You can build whatever you can dream of, whether that be a website with an amazing feature, a phone app, or a rad piece of hardware (Soldering is NOT allowed)! Our only rule is that all code must be written during the miniMAKEathon itself. Feel free to use open source libraries and APIs; companies attending may provide their own as well. Impress us!

When does the event end?
Project judging and Award ceremony will end at 5 pm on Sunday.

How will the projects be presented?
On Sunday at 2:00pm, all makers/hackers will have the option to demo their hacks to sponsors and their fellow hackers in an expo event.

This miniMAKEathon is a 3-day ‘make' and 'create’ event where high school, and college students demonstrate their application of STEM knowledge, skills, creative problem solving through hands-on mini projects. miniMAKEathon events are real world industry theme and STEM subject driven and mentored by industry experts.

These components are available for use at the event. Plan to bring your own materials necessary for your project including any software. General open source software will be available on a shared drive. All parts must be returned to the event manager at the end of the event.
